Cannabis-Enhanced Recipe: Whipped Body Butter
A quick recipe for a nice cannabis-enhanced body butter.
For several years I’ve made my own lotions, deodorants, and other beauty items. I’ve based recipes on a wide variety of sources — I’ve even tried a variety of recipes from old sources!. Throughout my explorations, I’ve long been curious about whether or not cannabis-enhanced lotions would work. When True Terpenes hooked me up with a gift package of their high-quality terpenes, I was excited to try making some of my own.
I knew I wanted to include some medicinal value in whatever product I made. I happened to have some enhanced coconut oil I made from water-cured already vaped bud, so I figured that would be a great additive to my body butter!
Body butter has a thick texture because it contains less water than lotion, so I thought this would make it far more effective for helping with medicinal impact of the cannabis. I’ve had the chance to use my terpene-enhanced THC lotion, and I have to say: I’m pleased with the results. I’ve been using it mainly for the soreness in my lower back, but I’ve also found that it’s great to keep my hands feeling smooth and fresh even during marathon-length stitching sessions.
The important thing to keep in mind is the ratio of hard butters (shea, and cocoa) to the softer oils.
Ingredients
1/8 cup of cocoa butter
1/8 cup of shea butter
1/4 cup almond oil
1/4 cup of enhanced coconut oil
1–2 tsp of starch (arrowroot powder preferably, corn starch if in a pinch).
Optional, but Awesome ingredients:
10 drops of Strawnana terpenes.*
5 drops of Pineapple terpenes.*
*feel free to use any terpenes or essential oils to enhance your body butter. The great thing about being able to use terpenes is that they have medicinal properties on their own!
Directions:
I grated the cocoa butter, and that’s probably one of my favorite parts of this process. The 100% organic cocoa butter smelled 100% totally delicious. I’m very tempted to make some sort of chocolate-smelling version of this stuff just based on that cocoa butter. 10/10 highly recommend, just for that pleasure. You’ll also want to try and break apart the chunks of shea butter into something more meltable as well!
Use a double boiler or other sufficiently gentle method to heat the butters and oils together while you stir, stir, stir. Once everything is melted, take it off the heat and add the yummy smells. I loved how the Strawnana and Pineapple Diesel terpenes smelled together, so that’s what I chose, and it created a fruity smelling lotion that complements a variety of the perfumes I wear. Several of the terpenes included in both of these strains help with skin permeation, so they probably help as well!
Once the oils and essential oils / terpenes have been mixed in, I popped the lotion in the fridge overnight to solidify. Once that was done, I whipped it — in my case I used a nice little whisk I have for such purposes, but I’m sure a smarter person with a more equipped kitchen would use a mixer (either stand or manual). As I went, I added in arrowroot powder until I was satisfied that the resulting body butter wasn’t too overly greasy.
I wish I could say that this lotion is beautifully photogenic and include a picture, but honestly it’s not photogenic at all. That’s entirely my fault — next time I will make a special version of coconut oil for this lotion so that I can make something more visually appealing that would be appropriate for gifts.
I really like the body butter this recipe made, and love how it smells. This is definitely another really neat application of terpene extracts!
