Sun God Medicinals has reduced its pricing in order to ensure its consumers still have access to high-quality, safe medicine.

Yes, you read that right.

And yes, in this economy (in fact — because of it!)!

In a letter posted on their website, Brie Malarkey explains, “I know this sounds crazy during a time when everyone is raising their prices — but we deeply believe in our mission as a company. We do not want our customers looking for alternatives to products that they know and love.”

If the names Brie Malarkey and Sun God Medicinals ring a bell for you, it’s because a few weeks ago in July, I wrote about Breeze Botanicals and the compassion program they are running. That program, run in conjunction with 54 Green Acres, assists veterans in receiving heavily discounted cannabis. Breeze Botanicals is an apothecary that Brie opened that is also is the first OLCC-licensed dispensary in the state of Oregon. Brie fought hard to find communities that would welcome her, and has kept those communities centered in her thoughts and actions since.

The Sun God story started with Brie’s desire to help her son sleep. She developed a tea for him based on her extensive research into herbalism. Her desire to help others led her to sell Hypnos Tea at a local farmer’s market. From there, Sun God Medicinals blossomed. Sun God Medicinals features a line of products formulated by a herbalist and feature healing herbs that are organically grown. Blended without filler ingredients, the variety of healing plants featured in their salves, pet products, and smoking blends are grown within 100 miles of their location in Southern Oregon (another way that Breeze and Sun God literally center their community).

It’s Brie’s passion for the work and centering of the community that originally enamored Sam Schuh, who is now the General Store Manager for Breeze Botanicals. Sam is passionate about how important herbs, which include cannabis, are to people. She heard from many clients that they were having to make hard choices about their medications and health in the economic downturn. There are discounts available on the medical cannabis card’s cost for those that are part of Medicaid, Medicare, or receive foodstamps — but those programs do not defray the cost of the herbal medicines themselves. This leaves many consumers having to face going back on prescription medications that are subsidized by insurance. “We didn’t want people’s medicine to be one of those things on the chopping block. We knew who our customers were, we acknowledge that people are able to spend between 30 and 50 dollars, and we wanted to be sure that the people who needed our medicine could access it.”

In the press release about the decrease, Sam explained, “We started collecting data and became very alarmed by the number of customers voicing concerns over these difficult decisions and knew we had to act quickly and support our customers during this unprecedented time.”

Brie can also see the impact. “People are making choices between rent and fuel costs and herbal medicines. And they might be getting better results with herbal medicine. In the last six months the reuqets for coupon codes have gone up, and we knew we could really work to consolidate our operations and look for efficiencies and help. And while our costs are skyrocketing, it just felt like the right move, so we did it. All we did was a price decrease, but people have been literally crying with relief at dispensary days.”

Customers are also writing to express their gratitude (though for obvious reasons many stay anonymous). One such customer, Madison, wrote, “You guys are AMAZING! I have been using your products daily for a seizure disorder for many years now. The price point was “ok” but the quality and care you put into your products is second to none. I’ve greatly reduced my seizures and love how “clean” your products are. Simply wanted to say THANK YOU for reducing your pricing. This means the world to me and will help me put a little aside each month for some savings.”

I can also attest that Sun God Medicinal’s products are exceptional in quality. Their tinctures require a smaller dosage and have a larger impact. I’ve had their syrups before (their Lavender Lemonade syrup IS something to write home about), and their tinctures are absolutely phenomenal. They also go the extra step and fully share the test results online via QRCode / Lookup.

I don’t want to be too much of a fangirl here, but the work that Brie, Sam, and everyone at Breeze Botanicals and Sun God Medicinals is doing is both exemplary and inspirational. In a time when the news is oversaturated with stories of opportunism and greed, to hear about a cannabis company that is dedicated to their community and clients is refreshing.
