The king follows his Queen. I’ve been taking down the Daily entries as not to clutter people too much with my tarot writings, but I’ll leave up yesterday’s, as it just seems appropriate to let these two sit together.

Unlike the Queen of Cups, whose throne is partially grounded on shore, the King of Cups is adrift in the sea, fish frolicking behind him. He isn’t staring into the depths of his steadily-held cup, instead his gaze is fixed outward, observing.

The King is calm, reassuring us that the seas of emotion, though tempestuous now, will pass. This king is calm and balanced, despite everything around him. His past has brought self-awareness and maturity to his diplomatic approach to things He hold his both cup and his scepter (or royal seal, depending on who you ask) steady, showing the ability to balance the head and the heart. Emotional balance and calm is key to this card.

This isn’t to say that emotional balance can’t be ‘inappropriate.’ Constantly falsifying a sense of calm in order to not deal with the emotional impact of life’s path isn’t an appropriate response, and it will come with its own set of issues. Balance — even in balance — is important.
