The Queen of Cups is a nurturing, empathetic woman. She is comfortable with emotions, intuitive, and caring. If there is anyone who is being the flow, it is the Queen of Cups. She embodies flow — her robes look like they are waves of water falling from her shoulders. Though she is surrounded by a tempestuous sea, she is stable, grounded, and able to see things for what they are. Her cup, unlike the others in this suit, is lidded, her emotions coming from deep within.

The Queen of Cups is one of those cards that crops up for me when I’m losing touch with that sort of maternal, instinctual, empathic energy. So much of the Queen of Cups calls to being in tune with the world, looking through our deepest feelings and being able to understand how they fit within the greater whole of the world.

The flip side is the danger to getting overwhelmed by your own emotions — until the cup you are peering into overtakes the entire world, and you overreact to the emotions within, or using them to manipulate those around you.

Understanding our emotional balance is vital to mental health, and whenever this card comes up, I try to be more mindful of what emotions are being brought to the surface around me, and to try and apply the compassion and empathy this card signifies.
