Traditionally this card was said to indicate a journey by sea, and it is easy to see why. In most of the decks I own, this card uses imagery evocative of the soul’s journey across the river Styx. This would indicate not only a journey, but a journey away from the current set of troubles. While this is a time of transition, it is also a time to consider what has happened, and what will serve you as you move into the next phase of life.

In the Rider Waite tarot, as shown above, there are three figures (traditionally described as a woman, a child, and a ferryman) in a boat filled with swords. The water is turbulent on the right and calm on the left. While we are moving into a new phase, we still have our lessons with us. We may need to adjust our point of view to guide us through the waters, but we are moving forward.

This card is emblematic of moving beyond sorrow or suffering and into new stages of life. This is a journey that we all must take at some time or another, and while it has its own challenges, it’s ultimately a time of reflection while moving forward.
